I am a huge fan of classic, simple design. I love clean lines, simplistic groupings with neutral color pallets with subtle pops of color. I also love thirfty design when possible. Here is an example of an outdoor Halloween decor scheme.
Skulls are a simple, but spooky Halloween addition. These skulls were purchased at a few different including the dollar store (yup they were a dollar!!!), the local thrift store and Walmart (the mini skulls). I also added a few fake rats, also purchased from the dollar store.
Don't you just love lanterns! They are one of my favorite decorating pieces these days. With this Halloween display, they look spooky without being gory. A very subtle spook. Two of these (the painted and gold ones) were purchased from the local thrift store and the silver one was purchased form Ikea. Add a few rats to give that eerie vibe.
Crates are a good way to add dimension and volume to a space without being too overwhelming. The stained wood crates were purchased form Michaels and stained with MiniWax (color: Provincial) and sealed with polyurethane for durability. The black crate was painted with crack medium paint with black acrylic paint over it, then sealed with polyurethane for durability.
The potion bottle to the right was a maple syrup bottle.....yup maple syrup! Potion bottle tutorial to come.
Pillow are an easy way to add smalls pops of color and tie a color scheme together. The "C" was painted with just an acrylic paint.
Have I mentioned I am a fan of the dollar store & thrift stores when it comes to decorating for the holidays, especially outside! In this picture most of it is purchased for those two places, including the skeleton on the wreath, the small white planter, the skulls, the small black shelf, the skull, the crow, the rate.....pretty much everything but the wreath. The items don't come from the dollar store and thrift store looking exactly the way I wanted but staging and painting are the keys to making an item into what you want and giving it potential.
I love paint!!!! Oh so much! It has the ability to transform pretty much anything potential to be awesome!!! Walking through the dollar store I saw these borders, added a little satin nickel paint and they turned out exactly how I wanted.
The "Dead & Breakfast" customizable sign is a new favorite and will be available in the shop next season. Also we are hoping to have "Toil & Trouble Company" apple crates available as well.
One last tip is to incorporate the things you already have. Chairs, table and planters can be a constant fixture and decorated around.
